Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong is set to undergo minor surgery in Finland this week for an injury he sustained during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The 30-year-old suffered the injury in Nigeria’s second group game against hosts Cote d’Ivoire, where he scored the winning goal from the penalty spot.
Troost-Ekong played a vital role in Jose Peseiro’s team during the AFCON 2023, guiding Nigeria to the final. Unfortunately, despite his goal in the final, the team fell short to a late winner from Borussia Dortmund’s Sebastien Haller of Ivory Coast.
However, he made the brave decision to continue playing through the pain, featuring in every minute of the competition thereafter, including a grueling 120-minute match against South Africa. Unfortunately, the sacrifice he made has now led to a ripple effect, resulting in the need for surgery.
According to Fabrizio Romano, renowned journalist, Troost-Ekong will undergo surgery in Finland to repair a ruptured biceps femoris in his right leg. Despite battling the injury, he exhibited exceptional determination by anchoring the Super Eagles’ defense, scoring crucial goals, and ultimately earning the title of Player of the Tournament.
Troost-Ekong’s tenacity and resilience have garnered praise from the Nigerian football community, solidifying his place in the history books as a notable figure.
